New year, new players, Detroit Lions lose opener ‘in the most Lions ending ever’

In a year where nothing is normal, we found something that felt all too familiar. 

The Detroit Lions.

They had a 23-6 lead in the fourth quarter in the season opener against the Chicago Bears, which looked rough on offense (to say the least). 

An insurmountable lead right? 1-0 to start the season, right? This year will be different, right?

The Lions gave up 21 points in the fourth and lost, 27-23, to begin the 2020 season. 

In a game where the new leader/linebacker was ejected after trying to demonstrate an illegal hit on an official, that wasn’t the most Lions-y thing to happen in this game. 

And social media was ablaze with reaction after the game. 

Even former Lions couldn’t believe it:

Nor could prominent figures in other sports: 

But, maybe there was a bright side to this game: 

Among the people who’ll be blamed — fair or not — will be rookie D’Andre Swift. He dropped a sure touchdown pass with about 10 seconds left that would have won the game. 

Alas, it wasn’t to be.
