Lions hiring Jim Harbaugh would be cruel irony for Michigan football fans

The Detroit Lions have a need for a new head coach, so could they hire the coach at the University of Michigan with Jim Harbaugh staying in the state?

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh is expected to draw interest from NFL teams this offseason. Could one of those interested teams be from the same state he’s coached for the last handful of years?

The Detroit Lions fired Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn on Saturday afternoon while the Wolverines trailed Penn State and appear likely to lose to the winless Nittany Lions.

Could the Lions hire Jim Harbaugh?

Harbaugh’s time in Ann Arbor is expected to come to an end at the end of the season, but wouldn’t it be some cruel fate for Michigan football fans who double as Lions fans if they see their college coach they hated become the coach of the NFL team they root for?

As a casual observer, I’d love to see it happen because some people just like to watch the world burn.

It may not be very likely because the Lions should give the keys to the franchise to Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy or give Jim Caldwell the job again after he was unceremoniously fired after leading the Lions to a pair of playoff appearances.

Harbaugh should get a shot with an NFL club this offseason if he wants with the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Chargers, Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans among the teams who could be interested.

But wouldn’t it be hilarious if the Lions hired Harbaugh to see what the reaction would be from Michigan football fans who saw him underachieve for years and constantly lose to rivals during his time in Ann Arbor?
