Justin Rogers breaks down Goff’s tape, why Lions may pass on QB at 7

Pride of Detroit

Earlier this week, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News penned an article breaking down new Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff based on watching some of his play over the past three years. Rogers watched three games from each of the last three seasons to find out Goff’s strengths, weaknesses, and how the Lions may be able to put him in the best position to succeed in Detroit.

So on Wednesday afternoon, we pepper Rogers with a bunch of questions regarding Goff, the Lions’ cap situation and his first impressions of new head coach Dan Campbell based on his one-on-one interview with him a month ago.

Rogers explains that he believes the Lions’ belief in Goff is significant, and therefore, he doesn’t think Detroit will target a quarterback with the seventh overall pick.

“I look at this situation, I look at the assets they paid, I listed to the words that Dan Campbell told me about how he wants to build a roster—there didn’t seem to be much ambiguity there in not wanting to force getting a quarterback,” Rogers said. “Mind you, this was the morning of Matthew Stafford being traded, so thing might change, but I just don’t see it at seven.”

Later in the conversation, we turn our attention to Campbell and what his “superpower” is. Then Rogers jumps into what he thinks the Lions defense will look like based on conversations he’s had with Detroit’s coaching staff.
