When the Detroit Lions were tasked with finding a new team for Matthew Stafford, the talk about who the Lions should replace him with immediately yielded a variety of draft prospects.
When it was announced the Lions had struck a deal with the Los Angeles Rams, a trade that would net Detroit a haul of draft picks but also Jared Goff, the talk about quarterback prospects slowed, but it certainly hasn’t stopped.
This leads us to today’s Question of the Day…
Which quarterback would you not want the Lions to draft?
For this exercise, let’s imagine a world in which every quarterback aside from Trevor Lawrence is available and Detroit is on the clock—regardless if it’s the No. 7 pick or they decided to move up. Names like Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones are all available for choosing as the next franchise quarterback for the Detroit Lions: which guy are you just absolutely not sold on being that guy from this year’s crop of quarterbacks?
For me, I really, really don’t think Mac Jones is going to amount to much in the same way some websites and analysts believe Jones will in the NFL. For instance, a website like Pro Football Focus has Jones as the 31st prospect on their big board.
This isn’t me typecasting Jones as another middling quarterback from Alabama. This is me wondering out loud just how much Jones benefitted from having some of the best players in the nation playing in front of him and alongside him. 2020 Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith, surefire first-round selection Jaylen Waddle, and former top-15 picks Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III lined up for Jones at wide receiver. Players like Jedrick Wills and Alex Leatherwood and Landon Dickerson were blocking the way up front—and running back Najee Harris keeping defenses honest.
I think his arm is pretty average—definitely not an upgrade over Goff—and he’s a complete question mark when it comes to improvising with his feet should things break down. For someone who had things so easy for themselves at Alabama, Jones didn’t have to show how he could adlib after his reads, but his lack of mobility leads me to think it wouldn’t be pretty if he wasn’t surrounded by top-tier talent all around him.
