New Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes will kick off a new era of football in Michigan with the biggest few days of his early career. While teams do not build for long-term success via free agency, Holmes has a handful of tough, pivotal decisions that could either kick-start a rebuild or put himself behind the eight ball to start his career.
But before we even get to all of that, let’s try and see where Detroit Lions fans and their confidence level is at regarding the Lions GM.
When he was first hired, 83 percent of nearly 3,000 Lions fans said they approved of Holmes assuming Bob Quinn’s vacated title. Since then, Holmes has had an incredibly busy couple of months. He traded away Matthew Stafford for a haul. Decided to pass on using the franchise tag on either Kenny Golladay or Romeo Okwara. He’s also made it clear with the cuts of Jesse James, Desmond Trufant, Justin Coleman and Christian Jones that he has no intentions of cutting corners with this rebuild. He’s building an entirely new foundation.
He even made his first significant signing by adding Josh Hill earlier this week.
And that doesn’t include all of the culture building going on behind the scenes, whether it’s building a front office that will help guide a first-time GM or helping build a literal Culture Task Force.
So before Holmes makes more important decisions in the next few days and weeks, let’s get a baseline feeling for how Lions fans currently feel about their new general manager.
