POLL: Who should the Lions select with the 7th pick?

Pride of Detroit

The 2021 NFL Draft is starting to creep up on us as we inch closer to April 29th. The landscape of the top picks in the draft have also started to shift as we saw the San Francisco 49ers trade ahead of the Lions to acquire the Dolphins’ third-overall pick. The Dolphins, who received the 12th pick in that deal, quickly traded back up to the sixth overall pick, just one spot ahead of the Lions.

The most likely explanation for these unexpected moves is these teams want a chance to get a franchise quarterback. If you look around the league, there are more teams than ever before dealing with uncertainty at the most important position in football. Every team ahead of the Lions aside from the Bengals could be in the market for a new QB, which is both good and bad news for Detroit.

If the Lions were leaning toward taking a shot at a QB with the seventh pick, then it’s unlikely they will be left with “their guy,” but it also means that they will have a shot at the top offensive tackle or one of the best skill position players in the draft.

With that being said, that brings us to today’s Question of the Day…

Who do you want the Lions to pick at 7th overall?

My answer: It’s not sexy to draft an offensive tackle, but I think with Oregon OT Penei Sewell, you might be getting the best non-QB prospect in the draft.

Sewell projects as a potential All-Pro left tackle, but could easily transition to the right side or even move inside to play guard if need be. This gives the Lions plenty of flexibility with what they’re currently working with and immediately gives them an upgrade wherever they want to plug him.

If not Sewell, then I’d also be happy with WR/TE Kyle Pitts, or one of the other top WR options. The Lions need help in the worst way at wide receiver and this is a good year to need one. I’d also consider linebacker Micah Parsons if the move is to draft a player on the defensive side of the ball, but I’m not sure if he’ll be the best player available or the best value at No. 7.

Your turn.
