Amon-Ra St. Brown: ‘We don’t rock with the Packers no more’

Pride of Detroit

The Green Bay Packers had an opportunity to make quite a storyline in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. With wide receiver being a big need—especially if there was any hope left in keeping Aaron Rodgers happy—USC receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was staring them in the face with the 85th pick in the draft. With St. Brown’s brother, Equanimous, already on the Packers roster, it could have been a neat family reunion, much like the Detroit Lions experienced with Julian and Romeo Okwara last year.

Instead, the Packers chose Clemson receiver Amari Rodgers, a player with a lot of the same qualities as Amon-Ra, but fewer athletic traits.

This week, St. Brown joined NFL Network to talk about that moment in the draft and what was going through his head. The Lions receiver, who knows Rodgers personally, took the high road.

“I was happy for Amari,” St. Brown said.

However, the conversation quickly turned to his landing spot in Detroit, where he now stands to be rivals with his own sibling.

“Obviously I’d love to play with my brother, but now I’m a Lion, so we don’t like the Packers over here,” St. Brown said. “Obviously I get to play him twice a year now, so that’s going to be pretty fun, but I’m all Lions now. We don’t rock with the Packers no more.”

St. Brown said it with a smile on his face and in a joking tone, but one has to wonder if there is some true animosity towards the Packers for not only passing up on him in Day 2 of the draft but preventing the two brothers from playing together at the NFL level. If you remember, after not getting selected on Day 2 of the draft, St. Brown immediately went into his garage to work on his pass-catching skills.

Every piece of humor has a kernel of truth to it, and maybe we’ll see it come out the next time the Lions and Packers face off.
