OTA highlights show QB battle between Penei Sewell, Alim McNeill

Pride of Detroit

Like every year, the Detroit Lions released a highlight video of their first Organized Team Activity practice from Tuesday. And like every year, it’s a highly-edited piece that reveals little information to likely keep some strategical decisions a secret.

This year’s version is a two-minute cut that features a bunch of individual drills and not much 11-on-11 action. Jared Goff is obviously heavily featured, but they don’t show him throw a pass more than 5 yards down the field.

That being said, there are some interesting moments from the montage. There’s Amon-Ra St. Brown working on catching passes from his back. There’s what appears to be a slimmed-down Jahlani Tavai.

And then there’s my favorite part of the video: Penei Sewell and Alim McNeill in a rookie quarterback competition.

Sewell is up first and is targeting fellow rookie, Jermar Jefferson. The pass is high and behind him—with a tight spiral, though— but Jefferson makes an impressive leaping catch. McNeill’s pass is a little more on the money, but his receiver, rookie linebacker Derrick Barnes, was running a pretty methodical route and made the easy catch.

That is just another testament to head coach Dan Campbell trying to bring a little more fun to practice and keep spirits high. You can sense it’s working, too, as this video features as many smiles from players and coaches as it does actual highlights.
