Open thread: Should the Lions sign Todd Gurley?

Pride of Detroit

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions hosted former Falcons running back Todd Gurley to a tryout on Thursday. Lions RB D’Andre Swift spoke to the media that same day, citing that he would be “happy” if the team added the veteran back. Gurley is a household name that could bring some experience and mentor a young player like Swift, but if he gets too many touches like Adrian Peterson last year, that could diminish the usage of the healthier, more talented runners on the team.

Today’s Question of the Day is…

Should the Lions sign Todd Gurley?

My answer: No.

I’m not going to be torn up either way, but I think the Lions running back room looks pretty good the way it is right now, and adding someone like Gurley doesn’t really move the needle for me. If we’re talking about Gurley in his prime, then absolutely, but with the injuries that he’s had to deal with over the years, he has clearly lost a step and it is no surprise to me that teams aren’t lining up to sign him.

With the loss of Kerryon Johnson, the Lions still have Swift and Williams as their top two backs—a very strong one-two punch—and rookie Jermar Jefferson for some added depth. Maybe they add another depth piece heading into camp to compete with Jefferson, but I’d prefer that to not be Todd Gurley at this point, even at a cheap price and on a short-term deal.

Your turn.
