USC beat writer: Amon-Ra St. Brown may be the perfect fit for the Lions

Pride of Detroit

We continue our podcast series reviewing the Detroit Lions’ 2021 draft picks today with the team’s (first) fourth-round pick, Amon-Ra St. Brown. Brown was one of the team’s more popular picks, seeing as he filled one of the team’s most obvious needs and the Lions got a player on Day 3 of the draft that many predicted to go in the second round.

So to talk about what the Lions may have gotten in St. Brown, we chatted with LA Times beat writer Ryan Kartje. He was the perfect guest not just because he’s been covering the Trojans during St. Brown’s time in college, but he’s also a “Michigan Man” and a long-suffering Lions fan.

Kartje had some great insights and stories from St. Brown’s time at USC, and he is also very optimistic about the young receiver’s fit in Detroit. In fact, he thinks St. Brown could have a huge impact right away. When I asked if at 600, 700 yard season was within the realm of possibilities in his rookie season, Kartje didn’t hesitate.

“I certainly think he could live up to that,” he told us. “Like I said this whole time, he has a history of just sort of jumping into a situation and starting right away and having no issue from the jump.”

We also discuss some things he’s heard about how the Lions scouted St. Brown during the draft process, whether he can be more than just a slot receiver at the next level, and the top moments that defined St. Brown’s college career.
