A Detroit Lions wide receiver flying under the radar

SideLion Report

The Detroit Lions wide receiver room is not as it has looked in the past few years. The departures of Marvin Jones Jr and Kenny Golladay have many fans wondering who is going to be the next stand-out receiver to help new quarterback Jared Goff.

Everything indicates the free-agent signings of Breshad Perriman, and Tyrell Williams will be the new version of the dynamic duo with big shoes to fill replacing Jones Jr and Golladay. Many people forget about the second-year wideout, Quintez Cephus.

Cephus did not have a big rookie year in 2020 as he missed some games as a healthy scratch. This was frustrating at some points throughout last season as people wanted to see what the fifth-round draft pick was capable of with gunslinger quarterback Matthew Stafford.

He only played in 13 games and had 20 receptions for 349 yards with two touchdowns. Again, nothing too impressive, but he was very productive. Out of every NFL rookie in 2020, Cephus had the highest passer rating, which is remarkable for a guy who has mostly flown under the radar in college, the draft, and the NFL so far.

With all eyes on Perriman and Williams now, Cephus will get his chance to shine and could potentially be the diamond in the rough for the Lions. He could quickly become Goff’s new go-to guy if they have that rapport and are on the same page, which could be a similar relationship that Goff had with Los Angeles Rams receivers, Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods.

Let us see if Quintez Cephus takes advantage of the multiple opportunities that he will be given this year and see if he is ready to take that next step towards becoming an elite NFL wide receiver. He could easily end up being a WR1 on this Lions team if he showcases his skillset properly leading up to Sundays and prove to the coaching staff that he is capable of making big-time plays.
