Detroit Lions waive TE Charlie Taumoepeau, place C/G Evan Boehm on IR

The Detroit Lions announced on Monday evening three roster moves that cleared up two more roster spots on the roster. The team currently sits at 87 players and they must get to the 85-man limit by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Tight end Charlie Taumoepeau has been waived with an injury designation, offensive lineman Evan Boehm has been placed on the reserve/injured list, and running back Michael Warren—who reverted to the team’s IR list after being waived earlier in camp—was waived from IR and given an injury settlement.

Taumoepeau had been in competition for the Lions’ third tight end job, but head coach Dan Campbell admitted last week he was the furthest away due to his inexperience.

“When he’s been out there, it’s been encouraging,” Campbell said. “He’ll mix it up. He just needs reps and reps and reps.”

Taumoepeau earned 17 snaps during Friday’s preseason opener against the Bills, but he was not injured in the game. The Lions waived him with a Non-Football Injury designation.

Combined with the waiving of Jake Hausmann a couple of weeks ago, the Lions’ tight end depth is starting to come into focus. With T.J. Hockenson and Darren Fells assumed to be the starters, Alize Mack, Hunter Thedford, and Brock Wright will all compete for that TE3 job over the next couple weeks of camp.

Boehm suffered an injury during Friday’s game, eventually walking off the field with a limp. Being placed straight to injured reserve means that his season is over, so it’s likely a serious injury. Boehm signed to the team just two weeks ago, as the Lions struggled to stay healthy on the offensive line.
