The Detroit Lions lost in somewhat typical heartbreaking fashion on Sunday, but I’m not mad about it. To make a game that close against a team as good as the San Francisco 49ers with the current makeup of this team was quite impressive. The Lions are just as much in contention for the first overall draft pick as they are for the division crown after Week 1.
Question of the day: Did Sunday’s performance change your 2021 expectations for the Lions?
My answer: not much.
It was reassuring to see some fight and a variety of halftime adjustments that worked quite well. Although we’re just a week into the season, I perceive it quite similarly to the 2020 Detroit Pistons. I don’t think this team is going far, so if they manage to be competitive and entertaining (emphasis on entertaining, as they were Sunday) while still setting themselves up to lock and load draft talent in 2022, I’m a happy camper.
This team is still not set up to win many games, and losing Jeff Okudah on an already paper-thin defense is not going to move my season’s expectations any higher.
Did your expectations for the team change following Sunday’s opener? Let’s hear it.
