Lions sign Will Holden to 53-man roster, add Tommy Kraemer to practice squad

Pride of Detroit

The Detroit Lions filled one of their two vacancies on the 53-man roster on Thursday morning by signing offensive tackle Will Holden from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Earlier in the week, the Lions protected Holden from getting poached from their practice squad, and now it’s easy to see why. Holden figures to be important depth to the team this week, as Detroit is still adjusting to life without left tackle Taylor Decker, who suffered a finger injury last Wednesday. Holden was signed to the Lions’ practice squad in the immediate aftermath of Decker’s injury. He was temporarily promoted to the active roster for Week 1, and while he was active for the 49ers game, he did not play a single snap.

After a week of practice, however, it appears Holden has earned his way onto the 53-man roster. A 2017 fifth-round pick from the Cardinals, Holden has played in 13 NFL games and started in eight. He’s played both left and right tackle and even started a game at left guard once.

Last week, the Lions started rookie Penei Sewell at left tackle in place of Decker, and he performed quite well. However, Detroit had issues on the other side of the line, as Matt Nelson struggled at right tackle. It’s unclear if the Lions plan on shaking things up this week as they continue to look for the right combination, but Holden could be in the mix this week.

In addition to adding Holden, the Lions also re-signed Tommy Kraemer to their practice squad, taking Holden’s spot. Kraemer was waived earlier this week but cleared waivers.

The Lions still have one open spot on their 53-man roster.
