Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions news conference recap: On Lynn, play calling, Goff

The Detroit Lions‘ first 17-game season is in the books, and the fellas in Honolulu Blue and silver finished with a 3-13-1 record.

While that’s a step back, record-wise, from 2020’s 5-11, this year certainly seems like more of a success. That could be because the Lions picked up three wins and a tie in their final nine games this season, or because the Lions lost their final four last season, or because their 0-8 start this season had us preparing for a record 0-17 campaign.

Regardless, now the Lions’ focus turns to the offseason, who’ll stay, who’ll go, and — in a seemingly annual tradition — who’ll they’ll add with the No. 2 overall pick (barring a trade). Even after their loss handed the No. 1 pick back to the Jacksonville Jaguars (who seemingly managed to please the fanbases of both Pennsylvania teams by knocking Indianapolis’ Carson Wentz out of a playoff spot and putting Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger into one), the Lions should still nab one of the draft’s top pass rushers, either Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson or Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux. The Lions will also have the Los Angeles Rams’ first-rounder, which should fall in the 20s after Matthew Stafford and his L.A. crew backed into the NFC West crown Sunday afternoon. The Rams will host the Arizona Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs this weekend, and Lions fans will have a tough choice in that Monday night (Jan. 17) game on ESPN/ABC: Root for Stafford, or for a better draft pick?

But before then, Lions head coach Dan Campbell will address the media around 12:40 p.m. today.
