Jared Goff lands low in another ranking of NFL quarterbacks

SideLion Report

Chris Simms is unveiling a his 2022 quarterback rankings piece by piece, and Jared Goff has again landed pretty low in the ranking among his peers.

Jared Goff lands in some appropriately labeled tiers when people rank NFL quarterbacks that way. Ranking them 1-32 or something similar, he’d probably land in the 20-25 range for relative optimists–somewhere between what he was in two different parts of last season.

Chris Simms is unveiling his quarterback rankings for this year on his “Unbuttoned” podcast, five per day counting down from 40. As he unveiled No. 30-26, Goff landed at No. 30, followed by Tua Tagovailoa, Marcus Mariota, Mitchell Trubisky and Jameis Winston.

Here’s a piece of what Simms had to say about Goff, courtesy of 97.1 The Ticket.com.

He’s a guy that you look at and go, ‘Can he turn the corner or is he just holding the spot down for us one more year before we find an improvement?’ And the way it looks, I feel like it’s going that direction,” Simms said this week on his podcast as he unveiled QB’s Nos. 30-26 on his top-40 countdown. “He did nothing last year to solidify in their brain, ‘You’re the guy of the future for a long, long time here.’”

Jared Goff deserves just a little bit more respect, doesn’t he?

Simms is not the first to suggest Goff is entering a make-or-break season, in terms of his future as a Lion and going further to his future as a starting quarterback in the league. But to essentially rank him as bottom-five starting quarterback in the league feels like an underestimation of what he can do with better pieces around him, and Simms is also not the first to do that.

Some people like to lean to the fact Goff has played in a Super Bowl as a reason he should be ranked higher among his peers, etc. But just analyzing him for the quarterback he is today, as we should do, the Lions’ signal caller deserves a little better than what he’s getting when strictly ranked out in order of perceived merit by analysts.
