Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker talks goals for the Spartans as fall camp opens

To listen to Mel Tucker, you would think Michigan State football is emerging from a rebuilding season and not the 11-win campaign that put the Spartans back on the college football map.

“In order to sustain, you really can’t sustain,” the third-year coach said Thursday. “You have to get better.”

Much of what he said after MSU’s first practice of fall camp came in the matter-of-fact, deadpan he presented throughout the lows of his 2-5 debut in 2020 and the energizing return to a Big Ten contention last fall.

But his voice crescendoed as he explained the goals for the season ahead and where he envisions the Spartans will be when conference champions and bowl berths are determined in December.
