In just a few hours, we take the next big step towards the 2022 NFL season. The Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers face off at 4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday night as the final game of the preseason. After that, every single one matters.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, but for the Lions and Steelers, Sunday’s game is an essential piece to the puzzle. For the first half, it’s an opportunity for both teams to see where they stand, and have the starter shake the rust off. In the second half, it’s about getting the proper evaluation to make the right roster cut decisions by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline to get down to 53 players.
The Lions said they plan on playing most of their starters, but coach Dan Campbell made it clear they had no intentions of playing starting quarterback Jared Goff this week. Based on early pregame reports, the Lions will be sitting a couple other key starters:
Looking like no D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams for this game. If there’s a position where you have to worry about tread on the tire, that’s the one.

That said, it should still be an entertaining matchup with plenty on the line.
So below, we’ll be providing drive-by-drive analysis, score updates and highlights as the game proceeds Sunday night. Just stay on this page and refresh as the action continues.
The Lions got the ball first, and—notably—reserve running back Justin Jackson returned the kick to the 29-yard line.
Tim Boyle started the dive promisingly, side-stepping pressure and finding T.J. Hockenson for 15 yards. But the Steelers stacked the box and stymied the Lions’ run game early, forcing a 5-yard loss and a third-and-3 draw play.
