In the market for a third quarterback to carry through the rest of the season, the Detroit Lions had Josh Dobbs in for a workout this weekend.
The Detroit Lions lost Tim Boyle off their practice squad to the division rival Chicago Bears this week, which put them in the market for a third quarterback, if only to just carry on the practice squad. It isn’t going to be an earth-shattering move, but the Lions need another body at quarterback if they want to have three somewhere on the roster.
To that end, according to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver and the league’s transaction wire, the Lions had Josh Dobbs in for a workout on Saturday.
Dobbs, a fourth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, had a workout with the Denver Broncos on Friday. He had spent this season to this point with the Cleveland Browns, but he was released when they had to make room on the roster for the return of Deshaun Watson.

Dobbs has six regular season appearances during his NFL career, all with the Steelers (five games in 2018, one in 2020), totaling 10 completions on 17 attempts with an interception and 31 rushing yards. The Steelers traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019, and brought him back in 2020.
Dobbs spent his college career at Tennessee. He was the starter his final two seasons with the Volunteers, totaling 5,237 yards through the air with 42 touchdowns and 17 interceptions over that span. Over those two years as the starter, he also had over 1,500 rushing yards and 23 scores on the ground. In 2016, he led the SEC with 27 passing touchdowns.
The Lions didn’t immediately sign Dobbs after the visit/workout, so they seem to be just starting their search for a No. 3 quarterback. Expect someone to be signed this coming week, and it could still ultimately be Dobbs.
