The Lions should strongly consider bringing back a former starter to help fill out their practice squad

The Detroit Lions made a lot of moves at cornerback this offseason. They went out and got Terrion Arnold, Carlton Davis, Amik Robertson and Ennis Rakestraw. So far all these guys have played well and the new cornerback room is looking like a success as it grows together.

There is one spot where there’s some concern and that’s the practice squad. It’s a very mild concern, but worth talking about. The team currently only has one cornerback on it’s practice squad in Morice Norris. It’s worth noting that the Lions used him as a safety a lot this summer, so he’s kind of a tweener.

If the Lions were interested in finding an extra corner to join the practice squad, a look at their past might be worth it. There’s a former starter out there looking for a team. We’re talking about Jerry Jacobs.

2023 did not go his way at all. We learned that Jacobs being a starter might not be something that he can do at this time. The Lions put him on the bench late in the season and then he suffered a season ending injury right before the playoffs.

He had a shot with the Rams this summer, but an injury after the first preseason game ended his summer. Jacobs is a free agent now and here’s an opportunity for him to get back on his feet.

He might not be a starter at this juncture, like we said, but he’s proved to be a good rotational player that can come off the bench. Here’s a shot for him to find his way back on the roster if the team were to lose anyone to injury. It’s a very cheap thing to try.

The Lions will continue to shift their practice squad around all year like they have in past years, so there will be a spot open at some point. We’ll see if they ever consider going this route.
