Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed wide receiver Jameson Williams’ status after reports emerged about a potential police investigation.

Williams, who is already serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy, is facing possible charges relating to carrying a gun without a concealed carry permit. The incident has come under scrutiny, as the Detroit Police Department is investigating why Williams was not arrested during the traffic stop.

Despite the off-field drama, Campbell said Wednesday that he believes Williams is worth sticking with.

“For me, I judge people over what’s in their heart and I know what this kid’s made of and he’s worth hanging with,” Campbell said, via Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. “So, he’s going to learn from this, he’s going to grow, he’ll be better for all of this.”

Williams has denied intentionally taking any performance-enhancing substances. He was also suspended for the first four games of the 2023 season over a violation of the league’s gambling policy.

The repeated off-field incidents are certainly going to frustrate the Lions, but they do not appear to be finished with the young wide receiver. Part of that is undoubtedly due to his talent level. The 23-year-old is a major big play threat and has 17 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns so far in 2024.
