NFL analyst predicts the Lions will sign former fifth overall pick, here’s what that would cost and why Detroit should do it

The Detroit Lions have a choice to make this offseason with their offensive line. On one hand, they have Kevin Zeitler hitting free agency and on the other, they have Graham Glasgow who is coming off a not-so-hot season and could be a cap casualty.

Regardless of what they wind up doing, it’s agreed upon by everyone that the Lions will add a guard at some point. Most likely in the draft. Pro Football Networks’s Ben Rolfe believes they could add on via free agency.

Rofle wrote an article predicting the big free agent signing by every team in March and his big signing for the Lions was Khalil Mack, but in the honorable mention section, he predicted that the Lions could sign guard Brandon Scherff.

Scherff was the fifth pick in the 2015 draft for the Commanders. He spent seven seasons there and made five Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team. He then signed with the Jaguars and spent three seasons there. The big notable thing for him was that he has not missed a game since the 2021 season.

Scherff had a pretty good 2024 season for the Jags. He allowed 17 pressures and no sacks. He could be quite the help for a Lions team that wants to keep Jared Goff clean. At this point even if the Lions get Zielter back, they should still have some interest in Scherff.

What would a contract cost for him? Cap expert Joshua Queipo is projecting that Scherff will get a two-year deal worth $13 million. His projection for Zeitler is a one-year deal for $7.75 million. That is pretty doable for the Lions for sure.

With these moves, the Lions would go from a team with the best offensive line in football to a team that somehow has an even better offensive line.
