Detroit Lions rookie TE Hunter Bryant sidelined by hamstring injury; team adds ex-XFL DE

Hunter Bryant’s strong start to training camp has hit a snag.

Bryant, an undrafted rookie tight end, suffered a hamstring injury in practice Saturday and will not practice Sunday, Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia said.

Bryant was competing for the No. 3 tight end spot behind T.J. Hockenson and Jesse James, and was taking a sizable portion of second-team reps with Isaac Nauta being held out of team drills early in camp.

“I think, obviously, there’s a great deal that he does well in the passing game, and we’ve been able to see a little bit of that,” Patricia said. “And I think he’s done an outstanding job first and foremost of just taking advantage of his opportunity with maybe some of the other things that have gone on. And he’s gotten out there with some of those groups and has really just done a great job.”

Along with Bryant, Patricia said Bo Scarbrough will miss his fourth straight practice with an undisclosed injury.

The Lions made a minor roster move before practice Sunday, signing former XFL defensive end Will Clarke and releasing offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch.

A third-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014, Clarke played briefly with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018.

The Lions have been short-handed on the defensive line since losing rookie Jashon Cornell to a ruptured Achilles tendon earlier this week.
