After a fourth straight loss to open the season, Lions quarterback Jared Goff is wondering if the team needs to find an extra edge.
The Detroit Lions are 0-4 this season, but they have not been dominated start to finish in any of the losses. A missed delay of game call and a 66-yard field goal beat them in Week 3. In Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears, an offense that couldn’t cash in in the red zone (once in five trips) was a huge problem in a 10-point loss. Quarterback Jared Goff had three fumbles, losing two inside the 10-yard line–including one that was a quintessential Lions’ play, complete with a fortuitous bounce right into a defensive lineman’s unexpecting arms.
After Sunday’s game, head coach Dan Campbell said the loss “ought to piss you off.” Per Benjamin Raven of MLive, Goff echoed his head coach’s sentiment.

“I think you just get to the point where you’re … there’s no longer like, ‘oh well we did these things good.’ You know? Like, you get to the point where it’s like, ‘well, we still lost,’” “And then you’re not happy about it. Yeah, maybe a pissed-off team will execute a little bit better and that’s me included. How can we be better next week? Maybe getting pissed off will be the answer.”
Goff went 24-for-38 for 299 yards and two touchdowns against the Bears. But the box score doesn’t reveal several missed throws, and the turnovers on the precipise of scoring (even if the bad snap wasn’t completely his fault) made it an uphill climb for the Lions to win the game.
For all his flaws as a quarterback, Goff is not used to losing a lot. The Rams won at least nine games in each of his four full seasons as the starter, and he has started a Super Bowl. He went on to say it’s up to him as one of the veterans on a very young team to keep optimism high.
“A lot of teams, and again, we’ll have this conversation at the end of the year, but you know, a lot of teams you’ll look back and it’ll tank early and you’ll be done,” Goff said. “I don’t believe that’s the case with our group at all. But you have to be intentional about it. You have to be intentional about not letting it go there.”
The Lions will try to put a mark in the win column against the division rival Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
