Dan Campbell nervous about losing Aaron Glenn to Saints head coaching job

As Aaron Glenn heads for an interview with the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell is nervous about losing his defensive coordinator.

A little over a week after Sean Payton stepped down, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will interview for the New Orleans Saints head coaching job on Wednesday. His ties to the Saints’ organization are pretty deep, with five seasons (2016-2020) as defensive backs coach under Payton and having spent the final year of his playing career (2008) with the team.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was with Glenn on the Saints’ coaching staff for all five of the aforementioned seasons before bringing him to Detroit as defensive coordinator. The Lions’ coaching staff is down in Mobile leading one of the Senior Bowl squads this week, and that’s where Campbell spoke from Tuesday night.

Naturally, Campbell was asked about Glenn’s interview with the Saints.

“Well, he’d be a great fit (with the Saints),” Campbell told a group of reporters Tuesday night. “That’s why I’m nervous. Honestly, AG would be a great fit for just about anybody. That’s how much I think of him and know where he’s going. I know that’s real, that’s out there, they have a good feel of AG. AG has a great feel of that organization, the players, and all it entails. So if you’re asking me, it’s a fit. I hope it doesn’t go that way, but yeah.”

The Saints will be Glenn’s third head coaching interview in the last two years, including the Denver Broncos this year for what he said was nearly a six-and-half hour meeting. Glenn is looking forward to being a head coach, whenever the chance comes, and he’s embracing the process in the meantime.

“Whenever my time (to be a head coach) comes, it comes,” Glenn said. “I think we all know that at some time in my career that’s what I want to do. But I said this before and I’ll say it again, I want to be the best defensive coordinator the Detroit Lions ever had. Also, I look forward to that day I become a head coach. The interviews are coming around and I’m enjoying those things, they are fun.”

If Glenn does get the Saints job, Campbell will be interviewing defensive coordinator candidates in short order along with the search for a new offensive coordinator that’s ramping up this week.
