‘Frustrating’ ankle injury has Detroit Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown’s status Sunday uncertain

Detroit Free Press

Amon-Ra St. Brown broke his foot in high school and underwent surgery to fix a sports hernia in college, but the Detroit Lions receiver has never dealt with a sprained ankle until now.

St. Brown missed practice Wednesday and is day-to-day with the ankle injury he suffered in last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Asked if he thinks he’ll be able to play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, St. Brown said, “I’m not sure.”

“It’s only the third day,” he said. “Just coming in, doing the treatment and seeing how I feel day by day.”

The Lions’ leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, St. Brown injured his ankle when Vikings cornerback Patrick Peterson rolled into his leg after an 11-yard catch in the second quarter.

He left the game briefly so trainers could tape his ankle, but returned to finish with six catches for 73 yards.

“It definitely was hurting out there on Sunday,” he said. “Like I said, I never really dealt with a sprained ankle, but when I was cutting and stuff, it was definitely hurting but I just pushed through. The adrenaline definitely helped a bit, but I had to push through and finish that game.”

The Lions practiced Wednesday without their four leading receivers: St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, tight end T.J. Hockenson and running back D’Andre Swift. Lions coach Dan Campbell said St. Brown’s sprained ankle is more severe than Reynolds’, and the Lions could be without their top two offensive weapons, St. Brown and Swift, this week against the Seahawks.

Swift leads the Lions in rushing yards (200) and yards from scrimmage (308).

St. Brown, in his second season out of USC in 2021, has nine straight games with at least six catches and more than 70 yards dating back to last December. He has emerged as Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s favorite target, and last week’s game against Minnesota marked his first game without a touchdown since Week 14 last season.

“It’s frustrating, but I’m glad it’s just a sprained ankle,” St. Brown said. “Could be much worse, so I’m glad like I said it’s just a sprained ankle. Just treating it day by day and hopefully I can come back sooner rather than later.”
