Detroit Lions sign kicker Michael Badgley to practice squad

The Detroit Lions have a new kicker, and it was not one of the four they worked out on Tuesday.

The Lions signed veteran kicker Michael Badgley to the practice squad, one day after he was released by the Chicago Bears.

NFL Network first reported the signing.

Badgley scored every Chicago point in the Bears’ 20-12 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday. He played as a fill-in for kicker Cairo Santos, who missed the game for personal reasons.

Badgley has spent time with four other NFL teams: The Los Angeles Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Lions have dealt with significant kicking problems this season.

Austin Seibert, who won a training camp battle with Riley Patterson for the kicking job, missed two long field goals in the Lions’ Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Seibert missed last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks with a groin injury, when his replacement, Dominik Eberle, missed two extra points and sent a kickoff out of bounds.

The Lions worked out four kickers Tuesday: Sam Ficken, Liram Hajrullahu, Brian Johnson and Andrew Mevis.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Monday he was hopeful Seibert would be able to kick Wednesday.
