Jamaal Williams, in a way only he can, reiterates that he wants to re-sign with the Lions

SideLion Report

It’s surely mutual, but Jamaal Williams has re-iterated (as only he can) his desire to re-sign with the Detroit Lions.

Such as things serve as motivation for players, and there’s no denying they do, Jamaal Williams has had one heck of a contract year. With one game left, he is six yards shy of becoming the Detroit Lions first 1,000-yard rusher since Reggie Bush in 2013. He is also one rushing touchdown shy of tying Barry Sanders’ single-season franchise record of 16, set in 1991.

With reaching the 1,000-yard plateau, Williams will also earn a $250,000 bonus. And he can do it against his former team, the Green Bay Packers, on Sunday night.

Williams has made himself some money this season, as he hits the open market again in March. The Lions signed him to a two-year, $6 million deal in 2021.

Williams has already said he’d like to re-sign with the Lions, so the sentiment was nothing new when he was asked about it on Thursday. But Williams reiterated it in a way only he can.

Jamaal Williams wants to re-sign with the Lions, despite one thing

During a media scrum at his locker on Thursday, via Kyle Meinke of MLive, here’s what Williams had to say about wanting to re-sign with the Lions.

Hmm, let me think about it,” Williams said. “Spent two years here, I’m doing great. Do I want to come back? Do I want to come back to more blessings? Hmm, let me think about that one. That’s your answer.”

So have contract extension talks begun with general manager Brad Holmes?

With who?” Williams said.

With Brad.

Brad Who?” Williams quipped.

Williams does have one issue/concern with day-to-day life in the Motor City though.

Oh, it’s been lovely (in Detroit),” Williams said. “It’s been great. People treat me nice. I still don’t like the light poles, I don’t like that part. Because when I first got here, that was the only thing I could look at. It was like, why are the street lights on cables? They’re on cables! And it’s wet around here…..I don’t know. To me, I just think you’re going to get electrocuted. It’s just a flimsy little cable, and it’s got electricity in it, and it snow and rains here a lot. That’s all I’m saying. Just be careful.”

If you need a video of Williams on Thursday, here’s one via Jeanna Trotman of WXYZ in Detroit.

The Lions definitely would like to re-sign Williams. His saying he wants to re-sign can be seen as “of course he’s going to say that”, but it feels uniquely genuine when he says it.
