Lions president Rod Wood proclaims new jerseys will be ‘one of the great’ NFL uniforms

USA Today

The Detroit Economic Club held an NFL draft panel event on Thursday at the Motor City Casino featuring Lions team president Rod Wood as the keynote speaker. One of the topics Wood hit on in the panel discussion was the new Lions’ uniforms.

The team is unveiling the new jersey/pants combination next week, and the idea of getting fresh gear has clearly excited the Detroit fan base. What Wood said about the new jerseys figures to only fuel their fire.

Wood was quoted by Dave Birkett of the Free Press, who was one of the forum moderators,

“I think our goal was to honor the past — we have great colors, we have great history — but also put a modern twist on it,” Wood said. “So I think when you see them, you’ll see both of those things. And you’ll see, hopefully, uniforms that propel us for at least the next five years to be one of the great uniforms in the NFL. And we’re never going to change them dramatically, but there’s always an opportunity to modernize them and I think people will see that.”

There are a couple of key focal points in Wood’s proclamation. First, he immediately cited the team’s “great colors.” That seems to indicate that a new color (black being the most suggested) isn’t necessarily part of the plan. Also, he shot down the idea of a dramatic change to the uniforms. Perhaps an alteration to the font and striping?

We’ll all find out in a week.
