Lions reportedly sign All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to practice squad, move might mean the end of the season for another Lion

The Detroit Lions are just adding and adding and adding this week. The team signed former Pro Bowl linebacker Kwon Alexander to the team on Friday and then added defensive linemen Jonah Williams and Myles Adams on Saturday. Now on Sunday they’re adding another recent Pro Bowler to their team.

Adams is a big addition to an already really good secondary. The three time All-Pro and three time Pro Bowler was at one point one of the very best safeties in the NFL during his time with the Jets and Seahawks.

In recent years he’s struggled a bit and the Seahawks let him go during the 2023 season. He signed with the Titans this year, but the team released him in October.

The Lions are set at safety with Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, but if they’re able to get production from Adams as their third safety, they are going to be even better. Joseph and Branch can be ball hawks while Adams can play that Ifeatu Melifonwu role and be a safety blitzer. He had 9.5 sacks in 2020. He can do it.

Speaking of Melifonwu, this move might spell the end of the season for him. He’s currently on IR with a hand injury and when asked if he would be back this year, the answer was “potentially, yeah” and not a definitive yes. We’ll see, but if the Lions can get both guys out there, that’s a really good four safety group there.
