It’s incredibly speculative for any team, but should the Detroit Lions make a trade offer for Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray?
In something that is so 2022, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray grabbed attention earlier this week when he scrubbed all references to the team from his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Does he want to be traded? Is he angling for urgency on a contract extension? Is he considering going to play baseball (where he was once a top-10 pick)?
If Murray is getting ready to ask for a trade, teams who are peripherally or possibly in the market for a quarterback this offseason should probably being considering whether they’d make a trade offer. Despite recent late season drop-offs, Murray is one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the league and his future remains very bright.
The Cardinals are surely not going to easily be open to trading Murray, if it gets to that point and they entertain the idea at all. But…
Should the Detroit Lions make a trade offer for Kyler Murray?
Murray is certain to at least have his fifth-year option for 2023 picked up by the Cardinals this offseason, which effectively makes him under contractual control for the next two years. Of course agreement on a nice new extension would squash all speculation about his future.
The Twitter post from the account of “The Karsch and Anderson Show” on 97.1 The Ticket Tuesday wonders if the Lions would make a call about Murray.
Let’s focus on the price in a trade to get Murray. Three first-round picks feels like a start, and the Cardinals may have to take Jared Goff back in a deal with the Lions. A trade is the far easier (and really only) path for the Lions to unload Goff this offseason if they want to. But it’s hard to see the Cardinals wanting him, separate from the idea of them drafting a quarterback in April, which would naturally come if they traded Murray.
I’ve never been that big a fan of Murray. I’ve always seen him as an NFL quarterback who’s built like an outfielder, which is of course what he was as a baseball player in college. Whatever the reason, injury or otherwise, he has faded badly late in each of the last two seasons.
Long story slightly shorter, the Lions should not have a trade offer for Murray anywhere on their radar. He’s simply not a fit for the overall plan.
