Beginning Monday at noon, teams were allowed to negotiate with the agents of upcoming unrestricted free agents during the two-day negotiating period prior to the official start of free agency at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. At that point, the new league year begins and trades can become official and free agents can sign. Players can re-sign with their current team at any time.
This season’s salary cap is up to $208.2 million, an increase of $25.7 million from the 2021 cap of $182.5 million.
Coming off a 3-13-1 season, the Detroit Lions are in Year 2 of the new regime and rebuild, led by general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell.
The Lions’ top needs include receiver — they’re poised to be major players at that position — defensive line and the secondary. They entered the week with about $25 million in cap space, before re-signing backup quarterback Tim Boyle, linebacker Alex Anzalone and safety Tracy Walker on Monday.
Top free agents this March include edge rushers Chandler Jones (Arizona) and Von Miller (LA Rams), safety Tyrann Mathieu (Kansas City), linebacker Bobby Wagner (Seattle) and receiver Allen Robinson (Chicago).
Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson is the top trade candidate, with New Orleans and Carolina in the mix.
