Every year, teams toward the top of the draft talk themselves into taking a quarterback way too early. A message to the Detroit Lions front office: Don’t be one of those teams.

The Detroit Lions are in the market for a quarterback of the future. Jared Goff is likely not the guy, but right on cue with having the second overall pick it’s considered a week draft class at quarterback.

Still, there has been plenty of talk about the Lions drafting a quarterback this year. Recent buzz, backed up by a litany of mock drafts, has tied them to Malik Willis with the second overall pick. Failing that, picks 32 and 34 could bring a young quarterback in. With a quarterback room that includes Tim Boyle and David Blough behind Goff, who wouldn’t be excited by the prospect of a rookie bringing some excitement into the fold?

Despite their being no Trevor Lawrence, Andrew Luck, etc. in this quarterback class, there will probably still be multiple signal callers taken in the first round this year. The premium placed on the most important position on the field means teams talk themselves into taking a quarterback earlier than they should. As Brian Billick once said, “need is a terrible evaluator.” So is desperation to find an answer at quarterback, which Lions fans don’t need to be reminded of.

The Lions could be one of those teams that talks themselves into taking a quarterback in the first round this year. Here are three reasons they should not do it.
