Malcolm Rodriguez ‘day to day’ with arm injury; Detroit Lions re-sign WR Trinity Benson

Detroit Free Press

Detroit Lions rookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez returned to practice Wednesday but is day-to-day with an arm injury he suffered in last week’s win over the Green Bay Packers.

“We’ll see where he is,” Lions coach Dan Campbell. “He’s a little bit beat up, but we’ll probably — we may move him around a little bit (at practice) but I don’t know how much he would do today and we’ll just gauge it day to day.”

Rodriguez played a season-low 19 snaps against the Packers after injuring his arm on Green Bay’s first offensive possession. He returned to the field, but played sparingly as the third linebacker, behind Alex Anzalone and Derrick Barnes, and finished the game with a large brace on his right elbow.

A sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma State, Rodriguez won a starting job with a strong training camp and has been a fixture on defense most of the season.

He leads the Lions with five tackles for loss, is third with 51 tackles and has one fumble recovery.

Running back Jamaal Williams and receiver Josh Reynolds did not practice Wednesday, while safety Kerby Joseph practiced in a red no-contact jersey. Joseph, the reigning NFC Defensive Player of the Week, is in concussion protocol.

The Lions (2-6) placed running back Craig Reynolds (ribs) on injured reserve Wednesday and signed receiver Trinity Benson off the Denver Broncos practice squad.

The Lions originally acquired Benson in a trade with the Broncos last summer for fifth- and seventh-round draft picks. Benson caught 10 passes for 103 yards in eight games with the Lions last season.

The Lions waived-injured Benson in training camp because of a toe injury.

The team also re-signed receiver Stanley Berryhill to the practice squad.
