Lions rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams getting tantalizingly close to NFL debut

SideLion Report

The good vibes keep coming for the Detroit Lions, with Monday’s news rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams has been cleared to practice.

The Detroit Lions have the longest winning streak in the NFC after Sunday’s 31-18 undressing of the New York Giants. More good news came on Monday morning, with the team announcing rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams has been cleared to practice.

Williams has of course been working his way back from a torn ACL while playing for Alabama in last season’s national title game, spending the season to this point on the non-football injury list since his injury occured when he was a college player.

Head coach Dan Campbell previously pointed to after Thanksgiving and a December debut for the 12th overall pick in last spring’s draft, and Monday will start a 21-day window to put him on the active roster.

Williams had a big final season for the Crimson Tide in 2021, with 79 receptions for 1,572 yards (19.9 yards per catch) and 15 touchdowns. Big plays were the name of his game, with four 70-plus yard touchdowns and 11 touchdowns of 30-plus yards–both leading the nation.

The Lions have a top-10 passing offense right now, with the third-most 20-plus yard pass plays in the league behind Kansas City and Miami. And Williams will soon be added to the mix.

Detroit Lions: When will Jameson Williams make his debut?

Technically Williams could be activated and play on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, against the Buffalo Bills. But that would go against Campbell’s previous sentiment, and the Lions’ general take-it-slow mode with Williams.

Week 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars is a possibility for Williams to make his debut. Week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 11 is a better and the most likely possibility, just before the 21-day window to put him on the 53-man roster would end based on starting the clock on Monday. If not then, then Week 15 against the New York Jets would surely be Williams’ debut date.

Williams could play as many as six games this season, or as few a four. In any case, his NFL debut is on the horizon as the Lions added some great news to a third straight Victory Monday.
