Paul W. Smith: Get ready for the NFL Draft in Detroit next year

Detroit News

No, seriously, it really is the first day of May? Is anyone else finding this a bit incredible?

Lions’ fans seem to have mixed feelings, post-NFL Draft?

Certainly, Mayor Mike Duggan, Claude Molinari, Eric Larson and Team Detroit are busy taking notes on the scene getting ready for our big and important opportunity next draft, next year.

By the way, we all should now better understand why NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is by far the highest paid commissioner of any of the other major North American sports leagues, estimated to have $64 million earned for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

Just one of the perks of working for multi-billionaire team owners who actually might not think that’s that much money.

It could be argued that Goodell’s leadership and success in making the NFL so big, and the massive money he has made those owners, makes him well worth that massive paycheck.

What was the biggest shock of the past week?

Fox News firing their biggest audience draw and revenue raiser, Tucker Carlson.

Far less surprising, CNN — finally — parting ways with Don Lemon after a number of issues that — finally — did him in.

The biggest side bet following the same-day terminations? Which one shows up first on “Dancing with the Stars.”

I would have put my money on it being Lemon, but then I was told that Carlson already, years ago, danced on that stage. Who knew?

Here’s what I do know. Carlson has an enormous following and will be doing something important again soon.

Paul W. Smith is host of “The Paul W. Smith Show” on WJR-AM (760) from 6-9 a.m. Monday-Friday.
