Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers to play 2 Thursday games, including Thanksgiving

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers will play two Thursday games in the 2023 season, including one on Thanksgiving.

The Lions will host the Packers in their annual Thanksgiving game and visit Green Bay for a Thursday night game in Week 4, according to a full copy of the Packers schedule released by The Athletic.

The Lions are scheduled for three Thursday games this season, the two against the Packers and the NFL’s kickoff game Sept. 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

They will play both Packers games on short rest, unless they have a Week 11 bye.

The Lions have won three straight against the Packers and swept the season series last year for the first time since 2018. They beat the Packers in the 2022 season finale, on Sunday Night Football — their only primetime game of the season — to keep Green Bay out of the playoffs.

While the Lions will be the favorite to win the NFC North this fall, the Packers are one of the league’s biggest wild cards after trading four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets.

Jordan Love will take over as starting quarterback this fall, and the Packers added first-round pick Lukas Van Ness to a defense that tied for fourth in the NFL in interceptions last season.

The Lions have lost six straight Thanksgiving games, including 28-25 to the Buffalo Bills last year. They are 12-8-1 all-time against the Packers on Thanksgiving, with a 40-10 blowout win the last time they met on the holiday in 2013.
