The Detroit Lions have had struggles playing in cold weather late in the season, but this year’s schedule lines up favorably in that respect.
When examining the Detroit Lions’ schedule for 2023, it becomes clear that it’s largely balanced in their favor. They will not have more than two consecutive games on the road or at home. Only five of their opponents made the postseason in 2022. At Baltimore in October (Week 7) could be hairy for weather, but Week 14 at Chicago is the only true cold weather game on the slate.
In a recent interview with Tim Twentyman of the team website, Lions safety Tracy Walker said this was the best schedule for the team since he’s been in Detroit. The bye week falls in the middle of the season (Week 9), which is the perfect time for a break. A bye right in the middle of the season is what most NFL teams want when the schedule comes out.
To the delight of the fanbase Detroit will be in the national spotlight five times during the season, with four prime time games and the Thanksgiving game. There is also the possibility of two additional games in the spotlight of prime time. Game against the Denver Broncos in Week 17 and the season finale against Minnesota are not locked into a precise slot.
Detroit Lions 2023 schedule is favorable, but also challenging
The Lions’ schedule has some tough stretches as well. Their opening game is on the road on Thursday night against the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs and reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes. Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks are coming for a visit, along with their strong run game, in Week 2. The Lions have another Thursday night game in Week 4 vs. the division rival Green Bay at Lambeau Field.
Four of the last six games of the season are on the road. Detroit will travel to New Orleans, Chicago, Minnesota and Dallas for games with possible playoff implications.
The 2023 Lions schedule is favorable on the whole, but also not a walk in the park. Dan Campbell, his coaching staff and the players will have to live up to some high expectations coming off an promising 2022 season to make the postseason.
