In a recent ESPN ranking of cornerback units, Detroit’s came in at No. 23, three spots ahead of the Chicago Bears.
According to the league’s website, “This is still not a great cornerback group, but it’s better. I can’t remember a Detroit team with a better roster or higher expectations. The Lions should be favorites in the NFC North because they have the best line play and did well to address their biggest weaknesses.”
General manager Brad Holmes signed Cam Sutton away from the Pittsburgh Steelers and is banking on Emmanuel Moseley developing into a solid defensive back.
A significant determining factor that will decide how the secondary will perform in 2023 is the play of Jerry Jacobs.
After moving on from Jeff Okudah, Jacobs is poised for a solid campaign this upcoming season.
The 25-year-old is working this offseason to be able to find and track the football better in coverage.
“As soon as the offseason hit, I knew one thing I really needed to do is go tell my DB trainer, I think it was finding the ball,” Jacobs told the Lions website. “I’m there every time and as soon as I ended the season, I called him and said, ‘Hey, if you can help me find the ball we’ll be millionaires around here.’ It’s the truth. We’ve been working on that a lot. Finding the ball is the most important part of my game right now.”
