Despite starting off his career in Motown slowly, Hutchinson had a dominant and impactful second half of the season in Aaron Glenn’s defense.
He ended up tallying 9.5 sacks, three interceptions, two fumbles recovered and 52 total tackles.
The 22-year-old recorded more sacks and combined tackles (52) than Aaron Donald and Nick Bosa did during their inaugural seasons in the NFL.
As Rotoballer explained, “From Week 9 to Week 17, he made 5.0 sacks, 32 combined tackles, and two interceptions. His 9.5 sacks on the season were the 37th-most of any rookie, more than Nick Bosa or Aaron Donald.”
In a recent list of defensive NFL players who could have the biggest “impact” on the 2023 season, the former No. 2 overall pick earned a spot on CBS Sports’ list.
“Detroit’s hometown standout wasn’t necessarily as imposing as other pass rushers in his class; Travon Walker and Kayvon Thibodeaux both have freaky upside. But he still managed 9.5 sacks as a rookie, and now he’s on a much better defense that should have improved secondary support,” Cody Benjamin explained. “A breakout feels possible as the Lions look to finally storm the NFC North.”
Heading into 2023, Hutchinson feels like he’s in the best shape of his football career, and has revamped his nutrition and workout regimen to ensure he has a productive season.
“Lost a lot of strength last season during the season,” Hutchinson said. “And, it took a little bit to get that back and to add on it. But, I think I did a really good job with it, and was working really hard. Working on what I got to work on.”
