ROSTER MOVES: Detroit Lions’ Chase Lucas has won Dan Campbell’s heart. Can he win a roster spot, too?

Game notes: Week 3 of the preseason is when the real work gets put in. This is when championships are won — for Lions fans who want to sound smart when their fourth wide receiver goes down with a bone spur and Amon-Ra St. Brown has another unannounced injury and the passing game is going to … BAH GAWD, is that CHASE COTA’S MUSIC? Yes, the undrafted rookie out of Oregon (after four years at UCLA, so he’s ALMOST a double-Big Ten player) is one of several Lions hoping to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, with roster cuts coming on Tuesday, a full nine days ahead of the season opener in Kansas City.

Other battles to watch? Well, the Freep’s Dave Birkett has those right here, while our Carlos Monarrez makes the case that this is the single-most important preseason game of the season for the Lions. (There are only three these days, so he’s got a 33.3% chance of being right, we figure.)

The game matters for the Panthers, too, we guess; they’ll be trotting out 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young at QB — don’t worry if you can’t see him behind all the linesman, no, really, he’s there. Though he may not be for long, as the Panthers, under new coach Frank Reich (a former Lion, for two whole years!) probably want to keep Young healthy, lest they be forced to turn to veteran backup Andy Dalton. The former TCU star has the nickname “Red Rifle,” but he might be closer to “The Angel of Death” for QBs ahead of him on the depth chart; since wrapping up his nine seasons in Cincy — that’s a lotta Skyline Chili — he has gotten time with the Cowboys, Bears and Saints, almost certainly (we’re pretty sure) against those teams’ preseason hopes.

As we just noted, the Lions finally get a break after tonight, with their 2023 opener slated for Kansas City — the defending Super Bowl champs (who are led by a former Detroit Tigers 37th-round pick, so how scary could they be?) — on Sept. 7 on NBC. The Panthers, meanwhile, get a couple extra days off before opening against the division-rival Falcons in Atlanta on Sept. 10.
