No surprises here. The Detroit Lions are in the market for more help in the defensive back area after losing Emmanuel Moseley to a season ending ACL injury on Sunday. They have made their first move by bringing in a veteran. The Lions have signed Anthony Averett to their practice squad.
The former Alabama cornerback was drafted by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He started 21 games with the Ravens and played in 44. After his time with the Ravens, Averett started seven games for the Raiders in 2022. He was initially signed to 49ers this season, but they cut him shortly into camp due to an injury.
It’s not known if this is the only move the Lions will make at cornerback, but this is one that could see the field for the Lions due to his time has a starter. I wouldn’t think he’d be on the Lions practice squad for too long. He’s a guy that can come in and contribute to the 53-man roster right away and be a good depth piece.
The Lions released Darius Phillips and Trey Quinn from their practice squad to make room. They also signed tight end Anthony Firkser to their practice squad.
