Quarterback Jared Goff is having another strong season, and he has led the Detroit Lions to a 4-1 record while giving them an outstanding shot at making the playoffs.
They won eight of their last 10 games in 2022, and that momentum has carried over nicely into this season. It could very well continue to the point of giving the Lions their first playoff victory since all the way back in the 1991 season.
Yet Goff still has his critics, who still insist he’s nothing more than the seemingly average quarterback he used to be several years ago when he was a member of the Los Angeles Rams.
The signal-caller said he doesn’t care about such naysayers.
“Don’t care,” Goff explained, according to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. “There’s still gonna be some, and there will always be. Even if I’m playing great, if I’m playing poorly, there will always be haters and lovers. Ignore ’em all and keep trying to get better.”
Goff broke into the NFL as the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017 and 2018, and in 2018, he threw for 4,688 yards and 32 touchdowns.
He led the Rams to a 13-3 record and a Super Bowl appearance that season, but their high-powered offense was completely shut down there by the New England Patriots, who held them to a meager three points.
After the 2020 campaign, Los Angeles traded him to Detroit for Matthew Stafford, who promptly led it to the world championship the very next season.
Goff has experienced a resurgence ever since being sent to the Lions. He had one of his best seasons ever in 2022 while making the Pro Bowl, and so far this season, he has a 69.8 percent completion rate and is sixth in passer rating at 104.4
Perhaps Jared Goff isn’t a true championship QB, and perhaps the Lions aren’t a true Super Bowl contender, at least not yet. But both are experiencing a resurgence at the same time, and it has brought some happiness to long-suffering football fans throughout Michigan.
