The Lions are in the driver seat for big things in the NFC playoff picture

We’re halfway through the season and it’s time to talk about the playoffs and where things stand for the Detroit Lions. Going forward we will be talking about this every week.

Playoff standings right now:

Team Record

Eagles

8-1

Lions

6-2

49ers

5-3

Saints

5-3

Seahawks

5-3

Cowboys

5-3

Vikings

5-4

Right now the Lions are in a pretty good spot. They’re at the top of their division and they’re second in the NFC. If things ended right now, the Lions are hosting a playoff game at Ford Field for the first time ever.

But things can get better for the Lions. There’s still that number one spot. The Lions can still get there. Here’s how they can do that.

Keep winning. That’s the start. The Lions can do anything they want if they just keep winning. But here’s what the Eagles and 49ers can do to help. They can lose some games during a tough schedule for them. Here’s a look at the Eagles and 49ers upcoming schedules:

Eagles

  • Week 11 vs Chiefs
  • Week 12 vs Bills
  • Week 13 vs 49ers
  • Week 14 vs Cowboys
  • Week 15 vs Seahawks
  • Week 16 vs Giants
  • Week 17 vs Cardinals
  • Week 18 vs Giants

Those last three games are very winnable, but they’ll have to trek through hell to get there. Their next five games are brutal and full of other teams that are on their way to the playoffs as well.

49ers

  • Week 10 vs Jaguars
  • Week 11 vs Buccaneers
  • Week 12 vs Seahawks
  • Week 13 vs Eagles
  • Week 14 vs Seahawks
  • Week 15 vs Cardinals
  • Week 16 vs Ravens
  • Week 17 vs Commanders
  • Week 18 vs Rams

The 49ers don’t have to do it all in a row like the Eagles do, but they’ll have to do quite a bit. The Jaguars are beating everyone right now. That three game stretch with the Seahawks twice with the Eagles in the middle is rough and then they have to take on the buzzsaw that is the Ravens.

Compare both of those to the Lions remaining schedule.

  • Week 10 vs Chargers
  • Week 11 vs Bears
  • Week 12 vs Packers
  • Week 13 vs Saints
  • Week 14 vs Bears
  • Week 15 vs Broncos
  • Week 16 vs Vikings
  • Week 17 vs Cowboys
  • Week 18 vs Vikings

The Lions just need to keep winning and their schedule is set up for them to do that. They just need to make sure they do. Let’s see how this week plays out.
