Jared Goff’s unheralded decision led to the Lions’ best play of the game

Detroit Lions Quarterback Jared Goff had a very good game in the Lions win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. He threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 69.7% of his passes.

One of the biggest things that Goff did on Sunday wasn’t even with his arm. It wasn’t with his feet either. It was with his mind. David Montgomery’s 75-yard touchdown wasn’t supposed to be the play that the Lions wound up running. According to Amon-Ra St. Brown, Goff checked into it on the field.

That one that David had this 75 yard touchdown. I think we were the wrong personnel. I was.” St. Brown said. “It was supposed to be 12 and we were in 11. And so we called the play I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know what I’m doing on this play. Like I’m not supposed to be in.’ So I look at Jared he checks it. He’s like, ‘you know, this is checking to run. Everyone relax. He checks it and David goes for 75 yards.”

The play was originally supposed to be a tight end play

There’s a couple different things you can take from this moment. One of them is that Jared Goff is cool as a cucumber under behind center. He saw that his guys were a little confused and he checked into the run to give the team a chance to get to the next play and avoid a potentially bad situation with guys maybe not being where they’re supposed to.

The other thing is that Goff recognized that the Lions maybe have a shot a big play if they checked into this run. I’m sure he might not have expected a 75-yard touchdown run, but that’s what happened.

It’s a good that thing that it went down that way. This was a shootout all day long and the Lions needed every point they could get. Smart thinking from Goff.
