Are gloves a big problem for Jared Goff?

I often feel like my parents have no idea what I do for a living. They’re always asking if I have tickets to the game or if I’m bringing my wife to the away game or if she’s allowed in the press box. I have never felt more like I couldn’t explain my job to them than I do right here and now today. How do you tell your parents that you spent an hour trying to find all the games that Jared Goff wore gloves in? How do you explain that there was value to doing that? How do you explain that people actually care about it?

So here we are. I did it. I found all the games that Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff has worn gloves in. Not only did I find the Lions games, I also found all the Rams games. Then to prove that I truly do have a sickness, I found all his college games at Cal too. Here is what I found, It’s a problem.

The thing is that it’s not a problem all the time. Going back to 2013, I only found that he wore gloves eight times. That’s it. Not too bad. He’s had the luxury of playing in sunny California for basically his entire football playing life and then playing inside in Detroit. Nevertheless, here’s how it all breaks down for Goff in the gloves.

Lions

On Sunday against the Bears he threw for just 161 yards a touchdown and two interceptions. He also fumbled once. He completed a season low 57.1% of his passes. Not great.

He wore them against the Packers in Week 18 of the 2022 season. That game wasn’t too bad. He threw for 224 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. He completed 67.5% of his passes. He was noticeably not very good in the first half of that game. He did play pretty well in the second half though.

Two weeks earlier he wore them against the Panthers and threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns. No interceptions in this one, but he did fumble once. He completed 59.5% of his passes.

Rams

Goff wore gloves in the divisional round of the 2020 playoffs against the Packers. He was sharp in this game, even though he didn’t produce much. He threw for 174 yards and a touchdown. He completed 77.4% of his passes. No turnovers here.

Now we go all the way back to 2016. Goff had a bad day against the Patriots. He threw for 161 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and he had a fumble. He completed a career low 43.7% of his passes. Bad day for the then rookie.

Cal

Let’s go back to Goff’s freshman year at Cal where the team played in Colorado in November. Goff threw for 173 yards and interception. He completed 51.1% of his passes.

There’s one more. Also from his freshman year. Cal played in Washington in a couple weeks earlier and he threw for 336 yards and a touchdown. But he completed just 59.3% of his passes.

In conclusion, it’s really not something to worry about until the Lions play a a ton of outdoor games in cold climates in December and January. That has yet to happen. But it’s clearly something that hampers his game a bit.
