Detroit Lions News: Sign Stephon Gilmore? Sign Jake Bates? Amon-Ra St. Brown Extention + Mock Draft

The Detroit Lions have given every indication that they plan to sign wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to a contract extension this offseason. Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine predicted that extension will be coming very soon.

Ballentine projected the Lions to sign St. Brown to a 4-year, $115 million contract extension before the NFL draft. The first night of the draft is April 25, which was about two and a half weeks away when Ballentine made his prediction.

Last week, Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates blasted on the scene last week during the opening weekend of the 2024 UFL season. Right here at Ford Field, Bates crushed a 64-yard field goal (twice) in the final seconds of the game to give the Panthers the nod and a 1-0 start to the season.

On Sunday, Bates had his encore, and it was almost just as impressive. With the Panthers trailing the Birmingham Stallions 17-7 with only two seconds remaining in the first half, Michigan trotted out Bates for a 62-yard attempt. Again, Bates delivered.

Detroit Lions Urged to Sign Stephon Gilmore
As free agency rounds into its second wave, the secondary market seems to have plateaued a bit, which could allow the Lions to scoop up an elite playmaker like Gilmore at a potential bargain.

Bleacher Report lists the Lions as an ideal destination for Gilmore in free agency.

“Gilmore makes a ton of sense for the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions in particular,” Brad Gagnon writes for B/R. “Both have the cap room, the need and the win-now window. But the Lions are a little shorter on experience in the secondary, so we’ll roll with Gilmore to the Motor City.”
