Will St. Brown, Sewell extensions impact Jared Goff’s negotiations?

What Jared Goff is thinking now?

Along with the rest of us on Thursday, the Detroit Lions quarterback learned that the Lions have committed more than $230 million – $162 million of it guaranteed – in extensions to two of his teammates, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell, making them the highest-paid players at their respective positions.

Of course, Goff – whose contract that is scheduled to pay him a little more than $27 million in 2024 and ends after the season – is due for a big raise himself and is in his own negotiations with the team.

Will the St. Brown and Sewell extensions affect how Goff is approaching his own potential extension? And, if so, how?

Does Goff feel so good about the fact that his No. 1 target is locked up through 2027 and that his best offensive lineman – who has played both right and left tackle – is in the fold through 2029, that Goff might be more inclined to give the Lions a bit of a hometown discount on his own deal to allow them more cap room?

Now, Goff is in line for a substantial raise, no matter what. His next deal will definitely pay him more than $40 million annually, probably around $45 million each season and maybe even $50 million each season.

Will Goff be more willing to pick a number in the low end of that range because of Thursday’s extensions?

Or will he want to get his after his teammates got theirs and demand to join fellow QB’s Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts in the $50 million per year club?

The answer to that question will go a long way in determining how long Detroit can sustain its recent success.
