Strengths

  • Predominantly lined up at left corner in Alabama’s defense but also has extensive experience playing slot.
  • Extensive experience playing press man coverage. He’s comfortable playing mirror match.
  • Smooth, fluid athlete with loose hips and easy hip turn-transition. Plays balanced with excellent body control.
  • Quick, light feet in mirror match press man coverage. Athletic knee bend, staying balanced and ready to transition.
  • Consistently did an excellent job from mirror match press man coverage locating the ball on vertical routes.
  • Showed a good feel for routes and route combinations in zone coverage, playing with efficient eye discipline.
  • Smooth pedal in off coverage outside and the slot. Comfortable with knee bend in position to react.
  • Physical and competitive as a tackler on the outside in the run game. He comes to balance and squares up to tackle.

Weaknesses

  • Showed susceptibility and vulnerability at the top of the stem, losing contact with the receiver.
  • Not as comfortable in off coverage as mirror match press man. He lost his technique getting out of phase.
  • Struggled to stop his feet, which left him susceptible to curls and sideline out routes, too many steps.
  • Some off coverage snaps in the slot when he got stuck with his feet, and his transition-change of direction was sticky.

NFL Transition:

Arnold is one of the better corner prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. His 2023 tape shows a high-level traits athlete who played the position with comfort and poise, especially in press man where his mirror match ability consistently showed up.

Arnold was a mirror match master, showing quick, deceptively sudden feet and movement with smooth fluid hips that allowed for easy transition and change of direction. What always stood out in press man was how controlled and poised he was. Arnold rarely got out of phase or lost contact with the receiver. The tape showed Arnold is more comfortable playing mirror match press than he is playing off coverage, but that will likely come with coaching and experience at the next level.

He also gives a defense versatility with his experience and ability to move inside and play the slot, which he did at Alabama on numerous occasions. What you love about Arnold is his willingness to play the run and tackle with physical toughness and competitiveness. He never backs away or plays soft but rather looks to embrace the needed contact with proactive aggression.

OTHER NOTES:

Arnold came out of Florida as the nation’s No. 2 safety recruit and made the switch to corner at Alabama. He became a starter at corner in his redshirt freshman season (2022) and was a First Team All-American in 2023.

He predominantly lined up at left corner in Alabama’s defense, but he also played significant snaps in the slot, depending on the opponent.
