Usually, the saying goes: those who can’t do, teach, but it’s not quite applicable when it comes to the Detroit Lions. The men carrying the whistles, yelling instructions on the sidelines have been in the same cleats as the young men they’re mentoring.

In just a fantastic in-depth piece for ESPN, Eric Woodyard spoke with both coaches and players about why having former athletes on staff is working so well for the Lions.

“Players rave about the coaching staff’s previous playing experience, saying it helps the coaches relate to them in pivotal moments on and off the field,” he writes.

A tight end in the league for over a decade himself, head coach Dan Campbell has surrounded himself with nine former NFL players. In the article, Woodyard includes insight from current players on the benefits, including Amon-Ra St. Brown’s appreciation of the fact the coaches know what their bodies are going through. Former players like Calvin Johnson also weigh in, as well as offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who explains what he provides as a coach who wasn’t once in the league.

The Detroit Lions went into the offseason needing to beef up their cornerbacks room after finishing with the sixth-worst pass defense in the NFL in 2023, and they began that process by trading with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for veteran cornerback Carlton Davis.

The trade turned out to be even more important after the team released fellow veteran cornerback Cameron Sutton due to his legal issues. Then, in April, the Lions added a pair of cornerbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft in Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff could be next in line to sign a mega contract. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Lions are reportedly ready to commit to Goff long-term and strike a mega deal with the three-time Pro Bowler.

Fowler reported on SportsCenter on Sunday.

“The Lions are on record that Jared Goff, signing him to an extension, is a ‘high priority’ so they are working on this,” Fowler said. “The feeling around the league from the people I’ve talked to is that Goff will be the next quarterback to score that megadeal. You’ve got Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville, and some others like maybe Dak Prescott down the road but Goff and the Lions seem to be the closest. Nothing is imminent right now but they insist this is something they’ve been talking about, and the Lions are committed to keeping their core together. Amon-Ra St. Brown kept him on a huge four-year deal, and right tackle Penei Sewell four-year deal, so Goff could be the next with a four-year deal. The market is pretty clear, though. You’re looking at $50-plus million for a lot of these quarterbacks per year. We’ll see how far the Lions are willing to go.”
